IIT Bhubaneswar Introduces Odissi Dance As A Subject In Their B.Tech Curriculum

During my school days, we had a dance class every Thursday. And our Math teacher used to underrate that class and often say – What outcome will come out of it if you dance? Math is important. Period. But, is this notion correct? Maybe not.

IIT Bhubaneswar introduced Odissi dance as a B.Tech subject. It becomes the first IIT to bring this change in their curriculum.

The subject will be common for all branches of engineering.

Here’s the breakup of this subject for 4 years.

1st year:

Students can learn Odissi as an extra activity. Other activities include NSS, NCC, Yoga, badminton, volleyball and cricket. Whatever the students choose, they have to clear it to earn the B.Tech degree.

2nd year and 3rd year:

Students can take Odissi as an elective subject. The subjects include financial management, international relations and entrepreneurship.

4th year:

The Odissi dance subject will be optional here. If any student learns this dance in this year, he will get a diploma for this subject.

What will this subject include?

Kum Kum Mohanty and Iliana are famous Odissi exponents and IIT dean academic affairs, N C Sahoo have roped them in for this subject. The classroom teachings, activities and written tests will be conducted for the seamless learning.

Is this commendable? Yes. Firstly, students won’t succumb to the academic pressures. Other than sports, they’ll have one more option so it also broadens the options from which they can choose from.
