Indians across generations and states have one thing in common. All of us, at least once in our lifetime, have worn these chappals:
Alongside our love for Shahrukh Khan, golgappe and festivals, these blue-strap slippers are responsible for holding us together. We’ve used these as bathroom and bedroom slippers, wore these to school when we twisted our ankles and were unable to wear our regular leather shoes and during monsoon when everything else slipped off our feet.
But probably the best thing about these slippers is that they are extremely affordable. If you buy them from a shoe shop, they’ll probably cost you Rs 200, but if you buy them from a stall in the street, you’ll get them for as low as Rs 80.
Hence, when a luxury brand named Hugo Boss started selling these chappals for Rs 8990, people couldn’t handle it, reported News18. Its original price reads Rs 19,500 and the brand was kind enough to give a 54% discount. A person on Twitter shared a screenshot. Have a look:
Desis had a really hard time digesting the price. They listed the affordable prices at which one can buy these slippers locally. This honestly reminded me of the brand Balenciaga, which takes poor-people things and turns them into luxury items – like phata hua sneakers.

My middle-class upbringing cannot handle this. Need to keep this tweet away from my mom! 😛
