I clearly remember the day Newton was selected to be India’s official entry for Oscars, how people rejoiced and were all praises for it. There might have been a few who were miffed and wanted Dangal to be the official entry. But, all in all, people were feeling extremely proud of the fact that this gem of a film was chosen as the official entry.
But, just today, a news birdie came bearing the news of the Rajkummar Rao starrer being out of the Oscar race. Newton didn’t make the cut to the 9-film line-up.
#Newton is out of the Oscars race. The academy has announced that the film is not a part of the 9 film line-up which has advanced to the next round of voting. pic.twitter.com/b4u7JIm5l0

Indians being Indians, swayed from liking the film as the entry to expressing that they knew it would never win an Academy.
1. People took to Twitter to share their not-so-surprised reactions.
#Newton out of the oscar race & it was bound to happen. Utter boring movies cant win you oscar ..

2. Camp Dangal made the most noise.

3. More comparisons between the two films.
#Dangal was loved worldwide.. great blend of realistic & commercial cinema .. but hume toh woh bhejni hai jo oscar jury ko sula de.. #Newton was like a documentary film & those who have seen it they can understand what i mean to say.. https://t.co/YaNRUNB5Vx

Out of Oscar race…Ye toh hona hi tha..Bollywood standards have gone down so much that Newton shined and looked like Oscar-worthy..wake up B'wood and come out of the Karan Johar and Rohit Shetty averageness.. #Newton

4. Some felt it had to happen.
#Newton out of the #Oscars2018 race.
Nothing to surprise.
It had to happen.— Rahul Shrivastava (@TheLalaJi) December 15, 2017
Seeing all this, Hansal Mehta — who is very fond of Rajkummar Rao and a big advocate of films like Newton, which are brilliantly written and high on content — had the most fitting reply. He tweeted,
Am tempted to use unparliamentary language with all those who are rejoicing and trolling me on the fact that Newton did not make it to the Oscars. Oscars or no Oscars it remains one of the finest films made in our country in a long time.
— Hansal Mehta (@mehtahansal) December 15, 2017
It indeed does.
And, support started pouring in from Tweeple who love the film.
1. Abso-eff-lutely!
We don’t need an Oscar to tell us that #newton was one of the finest movies of recent times and @RajkummarRao is one of the finest actors today!

2. Makes so much sense!
I am seriously surprised to see the reactions on social media. People are behaving as if they win an Oscar ever year. As a cinephile, I feel immensely fortunate when I see actors like @RajkummarRao, pankaj tripathi.
I wish to see more films made by Amit Masurkar.— Samarpita Das (@amsam247) December 15, 2017
3. People even quoted Newton.

5. And, a brilliant film like this needs no award tag to be high on content and experience.

The discussions are at large and people are talking about the film not making it to the cut-off. We would just like to say that a film’s success and story and quality of content is never dependent upon the accolades it garners. These awards and recognition, though very appreciative, doesn’t determine a film’s calibre.
