Social convention traditionally places the responsibility of paying for a meal on the man when he takes a woman out on a date. However, today’s times acknowledge gender equality and it is okay for either party to cover expenses or opt for splitting the bill. Despite this progression, some women still feel uncomfortable or offended when asked to contribute. However, one man took to Reddit’s r/AskReddit subreddit to share a rather weird incident regarding bill splitting.
He was out on a date with a woman. Firstly, the woman arrived late and apparently, her reason for it was rather bizarre. But while they were on the date, the woman displayed some very poor table manners, like not paying attention to what he was saying and being distracted by her phone throughout.
“So I went on a date yesterday and first of all, she came late, the reasoning for being late was very ridiculous well off to the worst start. later she ordered food but the whole time was staring at her phone and wasn’t paying attention to what I was saying,” he wrote.
The guy tried his best to have an engaging conversation and saved memes and pictures of plushies on his phone because he knew she would like them. But the woman didn’t engage. When it was time to pay for the meal, the man suggested splitting the bill, because it was a horrible date for him in every sense. To this, the woman got agitated and verbally abused him for “wasting” her time.
“I was thinking of prompts to turn it into an engaging conversation, even saved some plushie pics (which she loves) and memes for funny situations she has experienced yet only got a one-word response from her. I just got agitated at this point and decided to ask for the bill and said ‘hum split kar lete hai’ (let’s split), she legit lost it and gave me a death stare and mumbled ‘paise nahi the toh date pe kyu aya, time waste kar diya?’ (if you had no money so why come on the date, wasted my time).”
The woman then slammed the money on the table and stormed off before he could even fathom what just happened. He took to Reddit to ask people online what exactly went wrong.
