The Amount Of Food That India Wastes Is Enough To Feed A Populated State Like Bihar For A Year!

“Many a little makes a mickle.”

The food production in India has been rising at a great pace. Also, we have started cultivating a varied range of fruits and vegetables making us the second largest producer of food in the world.

But if we come to think of the amount we WASTE, the numbers are pretty shocking.

67 Million Tonnes of food is wasted every year in the country which is actually more than what Britain produces round the year. It is also enough to for one of India’s largest state, Bihar to feed.

The numbers are unimaginable.

The real culprits of food inflation namely, pulses, fruits, and vegetables are wasted the most. The worth of the food that we waste is Rs 92,000 crore!

One of the main reasons of such large amount of food being wasted could be the lack of storage facilities and unavailability of proper transportation systems for food. The Hindustan Times report says;

“The picture is more alarming for individual crops. One million tonne of onions vanish on their way from farms to markets, as do 2.2 million tonne tomatoes. Overall, 5 million eggs crack or go bad due to lack of cold storage.”

This study was conducted by Ciphet, the farm ministry’s harvest-research body. The wastage of food gravely harms those who are deprived of it, but due to major unavailability, prices of food rising also affects the nation’s economy.

We must do what we can to save food.
