This is one of the proud moments for Indian sports. In a country that worships cricket, this maverick achievement has carved a niche in the field of sports.
Dipa Karmakar, an Indian gymnast, becomes the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics.
22-year-old Dipa confirmed her place in Rio Olympics 2016 by exhibiting a strong show in the Olympic Test Event in Rio de Janiero. She scored a thundering 52.698 points.
Here’s what the Gymnastic officials had to say:
As much as we are beaming with happiness for her, Dipa has proved her skill earlier as well in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
She was the first gymnast to win a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
She is also the first woman gymnast to register in World Championships in November 2015.
We cannot help but appreciate her never-dying spirit. Earlier in November, she couldn’t reserve her berth in Olympics because she finished outside the podium.
She stood at 5th position.
Since 1947, 11 Indian male gymnasts have taken part in Olympics (2 in 1952, 3 in 1956 and 6 in 1964), but this is the first time a woman gymnast has qualified for the Olympics.
Congratulations Dipa Karmakar for achieving this wonderful feat. We are super proud of you. 🙂
We hope you register a win in the Rio Olympics as well.
