The Congress Twitter Account Did The Unthinkable – Trolled The Trolls Back, In Style!

The Indian National Congress’ Twitter account conducted a poll recently which was part of their ‘Know Your Legacy’ series of promoting history. However, the party was unaware of the brutal world of Twitter and made the blunder of putting “Donkey” as one of the options.

Needless to say, it was a field day for twitter trolls who up-voted “Donkey” and the poll backfired for the party, with people ridiculing them for the blunder.

But the Indian National Congress did not let the trolling get to them and soon after, came out with an amazing response which really made us respect them for standing their ground. They published an article titled ‘Why Prime Minister Nehru’s 1958 Bhutan visit would have been just as iconic on donkeyback’, taking the trolling in good spirit.

While we do not wish to speak in support of equating politics with religion and Gods, a few lines did resonate with us. The article also included a warm gesture towards ending the ill-treatment of the load-bearing animal.

Reminded of the Aesop fable of the old man, boy and their donkey, everybody has a perspective, so be it. Not everyone who makes headlines for getting trolled can take it on the chin, which is why it is important not to make it a celebration. Journalists should be mindful not to incentivise the worst aspects of human nature that are on display thanks to online anonymity as it gives trolls and their handlers ammunition to cyberbully.
PS: Donkeys, as sentient creatures, are worthy of respect. To end the widespread ill-treatment of this hardworking animal you may donate to either of these organisations, The Asswin Project here or to The Donkey Sanctuary here.

The Indian National Congress has addressed a bitter truth about trolls promoting cyber-bullying, re-iterating that not everyone has the capacity to take deprecation on the chin.

Some people were quite moved by the Congress stance and tweeted positive reactions to the same.
