While a lot of people fancy the idea of urbanization, it comes with a huge price – deforestation. This environmental problem is a lot dangerous than most people realise. It causes soil erosion, flooding, rising temperatures, and leads species to extinction among various other dreadful effects. What’s worse is how people in a state of power to make change neglect these problems because it doesn’t immediately affect them.
However, thankfully we have people who are willing to invest their time, effort, and money into our planet to return it back to the blissful state where it’s meant to be.
A Brazilian couple has become an inspiration for many after their relentless contribution towards the environment. They have successfully and unbelievably transformed a rainforest from a destroyed state to being filled with lush green.
When a renowned Brazilian photographer, Sebastião Salgado, returned back to his homeland in the state of Minas Gerais, he was shocked to find his childhood green paradise turned into empty drylands.
He was devastated on seeing the trees cut down and the wildlife gone.
It was then when he and his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, decided to restore the green back into the forest.
The two founded Instituto Terra, a community non-profit and non-governmental organisation, and began working on planting as many seedlings as they could.
Since then, the couple has planted 4 million saplings in the area!
It’s been 20 years since, and the rainforest is not just back to its natural beauty but some other astonishing changes took place as well.
The insects, birds, and the fish returned. The water again flows from the natural springs and the Brazilian animal species at risk of extinction have again found a safe refuge.
With every passing day, the earth moves to a worse position than it did the day before. But we all can change that before it gets too late. Sometimes the change starts with planting just one little sapling!
