The Beti Bachao campaign was one that gained many acclamations when it was introduced. In a country facing a serious problem of female foeticide, the campaign couldn’t have come sooner. The objectives of the initiative are listed as prevention of gender-biased sex-selective elimination, ensuring survival & protection of the girl child, and guaranteeing the education and participation of the girl child.
So far so good right? And with slogans like “beti bachao, beti padhao” it seemed like the initiative would bring a new dawn for the daughters of the nation.
However, looks like they’ve taken a major detour from “beti bachao, beti padhao” to the same old regressive patriarchial angle. This is a new wall painting as part of the campaign:
Notice anything off about it yet? The incredulously clueless slogan on the wall reads:
“Kaise Khaoge unke haath ki rotiya,
jab paida hone nahi doge betiyan.”
Which translates to “How will you eat rotis made by their hands, when you don’t let daughters be born”.
Yes, because the major incentive towards letting a girl be born should be to have her make rotis for you. Why didn’t you say so earlier? This ad campaign feels more like a promotion for traditional gender roles, rather than prevention of female foeticide.
People on the Internet are understandably livid for all the right reasons:
1. And to those who say but I suck at cooking, stay hungry then.
Beti bachao, Kaam pe lagao, Roti sekao.
Make your own rotis, fool. pic.twitter.com/TVZNuBUhqq— Karuna Nundy (@karunanundy) May 27, 2018

3. Primitive doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Which primitive minded idiot made this? Beti is not a roti maker! Paint it on your face 😡@Shehla_Rashid @MachoMaestro @banojyotsna @poojashukla04 @ pic.twitter.com/cW4VtpREly

4. Logic is literally screaming from the grave.
Which bright-eyed person rhymed 'roti' with 'beti' and logic went to rest in peace?

5. And who in their right minds approved this?

6. Using one regressive practice to combat another regressive practice. Wow.
#betibachao so they can be domestic slaves. Obscene patriarchy on display. https://t.co/vq8dzS4RrI

8. Just out of spite, I’m never making another roti in my life.
What the fuck is this! Utter rubbish and should be removed immediately. Khud ki roti khud banao ya fir share karo! #BetiBachao https://t.co/MIsF2bkFXz

9. When are people going to learn???
Only aim it is achieving is to validate the mentality that beti ko ghar mein hi rakho aur rotiyan banwao. Ghar ka kaam karna galat nahi hai. Sabko aana chahiye. I do it too & proudly so. But that’s not all women are about so it’s demeaning when they are reduced to a roti maker.

10. Slow claps for the “creative mind” behind the ad.
Only Sanghis could think of combatting patriarchy with patriarchy..'beti bachao, roti banwao'..excellent! https://t.co/mrrJLeonwB

11. Right back where we started.
''Beti bachao beti badhao '' this seems to be getting converted into "Beti bachao Roti sikvao" why we people think too much? It's humorous that after a lot of struggle and sacrifices 'people' remained there from where they began. Akhir kab tak ?#krantikali pic.twitter.com/227PgiAK6m

12. The more I look at it, the more I want to scream!
What if beti refuses to make roti? https://t.co/HWl36LUSPg

13. Looks like that is indeed what we’re saying.
Who approved this copy? Totally resonates with the shitty mindset of our fellow countrymen.
If you don't have daughters then who will make you rotis? Are we saying this#BetiBachaoRotiBanwao Sir?#BetiBachao @rashtrapatibhvn @narendramodi pic.twitter.com/kMWG4i2wWh— Amar Thakur (@amarthakur) May 27, 2018
14. Because, patriarchal norms for the win always! Right?
Perpetuating patriarchal norms and sexist bias on gender roles is not what we needed out of #betibachao campaign. @apurva_purohit @debjani_ghosh_ @elsamariedsilva @shailichopra @priti_patkar @cheersrashmi https://t.co/ZEU4rsPDU9

15. They need to take a serious look at their campaign objectives.
#BetiBachao for life or is it to get unpaid housework done. Is that only girl is limited to. Really… https://t.co/M7YW55HTqo
— Supriya (@SUPRIYADEVERKON) May 27, 2018
It seems like every time we take 2 steps forward, we immediately go back by 4 steps. At this rate, a nation where we finally free our girls from the patriarchial burden they’ve been suffocated under since forever will always remain a distant dream. This is a major fault on the part of whoever is behind this particular ad. In an effort to combat female foeticide, promoting patriarchial norms is like pouring acid on a burn to heal it. Shame.
