Many would believe that the topic of women’s safety in India is a downright joke. And it is true. Despite numerous efforts to address the problem, women in our country continue to be sexually harassed and assaulted by random strangers on the street. Here’s another shocking case that has been reported from Bengaluru.
A 32-year-old woman, who is the mother of a 6-year-old and a nine-month-old, recently booked a cab online from Electronic City. She was to go to her daughter’s school to pick her up and her infant baby was with her. However, just after booking the cab, her little one started to cry and she spotted an available autorickshaw nearby, so she cancelled the ride.
However, the cab driver instantly called her and requested her to opt for the ride because he was allegedly already halfway. The woman waited for another 2 minutes but there was no sign of the cab. So she cancelled the ride and incurred a cancellation fee of Rs 60.
What happened next was downright disgusting. According to Moneycontrol, the driver went on to continuously call her and bombarded her inbox with sexually explicit pictures and videos.
The woman decided to take the matter to the police. She filed an official complaint on October 9 and in it, she revealed that she had a screenshot of a nude picture that was sent to him by the driver.
“I was crying by then. My neighbours took my phone, and scolded the driver. He immediately deleted the messages and disconnected the call after my neighbours warned him that they have screenshots of all the messages,” the woman said.
The cab driver has been booked under IPC section 354A for sexual harassment and the IT Act.
Women deserve to live their lives free of fear and with dignity. Cases like these show how much they are far from it.
