‘Used To Be Very Conscious Of My Body’ Athiya Shetty On Being Body-Shamed As A Teen

No matter you are skinny, have a perfectly chiseled body, or are chubby or curvy, people around will never stop body-shaming you. And it’s not just you and me who often try to ignore the unsolicited advice of random strangers. Bollywood celebs often try brushing the cruel comments on their body under the carpet to maintain their sanity.

Earlier, actors Sonakshi Sinha and Zareen Khan opened up about being body shamed. Now, ‘Hero’ actor Athiya Shetty opened up about losing her confidence on being body-shamed as a kid.

“Yes I have faced body-shaming when I was young,” The Tribune quoted her saying.

“People need to realize that body shaming is not only associated with being overweight but also being skinny. I have always believed that commenting on someone’s weight, appearance or anything that can make them less confident is something inappropriate.”

The 29-year-old actress further elaborated that films, magazines, and social media have all contributed to the idea of body shaming.

“I do feel that there are so many boys and girls, men and women who aspire to be a certain body type, aspire to be a certain way in terms of their appearance because of social media, because of magazine covers, because of movies, reality shows.”

“There are so many false adjectives of beautiful. I think it is scary because you see so many people wanting to look the same way and because of social media it is also starting from a very young age, which is sad,” she divulged.

She then rightly highlighted that we should use our words carefully before criticizing anyone. “Our words have such an impact on people and our everyday lives.”

“It’s important to be kind and understand that how we feel reflects in our everyday activities and it can come from a very subconscious place as well. So one has to be mindful of how they comment and what they say about other people.”

She further revealed that body-shaming affected her adversely as a child. However, she is more confident about her body now. “I do not really deal with them anymore. I used to when I was a child and when I was a teenager. I used to be very conscious of my body and I still am, but I am a lot better because I am a lot more confident about myself and who I am as a person today.”

She added that being imperfect is your own perfect. “It’s important to help society understand that not everyone is the same so I think it’s more spoken about for women rather than men to have different body types. All men don’t need to be muscular and look a certain way because it is tough to sometimes be a certain way and you shouldn’t need to feel that,” The New Indian Express quoted her saying.

Childhood body-shaming is an increasing concern. Hence, parents discussed ways to help their kids end it. You’re your type of beautiful. Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.
