Anushka Wrote A Note After Meryl Streep’s ‘Golden’ Speech And It Is Mind-Numbingly Good!

Meryl Streep, the Hollywood legend, gave an inspiring speech at the Golden Globes and inter-web is losing it. Not only has it become the talking point there in the West but it also has stirred endless debates here in India. Not only was Priyanka Chopra fan-girling upon meeting the ‘Iron Lady’ but even Anushka Sharma was highly inspired by her speech.

Anushka poured her heart in her heartfelt note she posted on her social media handles.

She posted a two-part letter.  In it, she talks about upholding the artistic values and her point of view and how her non-judgmental personlity is also the demand of her job.

She ended it by saying she wanted to express herself and pointed out how suppressing one’s belief will make it a withering, saturated society.

We are mighty impressed by the ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ actor’s well-crafted note that gives us a piece of her mind.

Here’s her full post:

I have had the pleasure of seeing the work of one of the greatest artist of our times – Meryl Streep. She is a genius actor no doubt, and like Viola Davis said about her – ‘She is a thief, she stares at you scans you to portray you if need be in some character she will play’, which made me think of this.-

The process of the work an actor does is often not understood by people and that’s ok because that’s not the point. Because as Meryl said- “An actor’s only job, is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feel like.”

And I know that actor’s, artist are generally very liberal thinking individuals because that is what their job demands them to be. They were like this as people. It’s what makes them be non judgemental of various people they observe so they can humanise them and portray them on screen. So being liberal minded is a requirement of an artist. Seeing things for what they are, as they are observing, understanding, empathising and then portraying that person on screen who very different from who they may be as people. And in order to do this and “to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feels like”, they have to have the absolute freedom from judgement. This is what makes a performance great or good or relatable at the least. I do believe that good movies, good characters have the ability to put new thoughts in someone’s head that may lead you to learn something new about people different from you and this means that films can in fact, teach people to learn to empathise.

And in order to do this the people behind making these films have to be the first ones to observe such diversity in things and life. That is why being a good artist is directly proportional to how much of an ability you have to be non judgemental, how liberal thinking can you be.

But if the very people who watch these people on screen, watch these thought provoking (they don’t always have to be socially relevant), just simply thought igniting characters on screen don’t want to see anything besides what they know. When they don’t want to see another persons point of view. that their perspective in life is the only one they feel should hold true. Then, in the long run the artist fails to grow.

I am who I am because I was always open to being challenged for my beliefs, was always open to trying to understand another side of the story and this is what makes it easier for me to live in this world. Because the world is made up of all kinds of people which is what makes it beautiful. And I am at peace because then I am not trying to control everything around me that is different from me so that, I can feel more powerful.

So curbing my need to be liberal is stomping on my right to be a better actor.

I don’t know why I wrote this. Or maybe I know. It’s because I want to express myself and try to make people understand that strong judgements and staunch beliefs will lead you to a saturated society which will wither and fail eventually.

Well, said Anushka! Very well said.
