”I decided to find a permanent solution for the problem by digging a well at the backyard of my house”, Pavan Kumar.
At 17, we dream of our next movie, dinner date or even a raise in our pocket-money but this incredible 17-year-old, Pavan Kumar, unable to bear his mother’s plight, dug a 55-ft-deep open well for his mother. Pavan’s mother, Nethravathi had to make several trips, after a hard day work to fetch water from the public well. It took this Pre-University student 45 days to complete the project.
In Settisara village of Shivamogga district in Karnataka, every household with a decent income has a well, but such was not the case with Pavan Kumar’s family. Stricken by poverty and unable to hire any help, Pavan Kumar decided to dig the well himself.
He took advice from the local hydrology expert and after identifying the right location, he single-handedly decided to dig the well. Despite the sheer hard work, Pavan’s happiness was beyond words at first the sight of water.
In an interview to The Hindu, he said,“It was really hard to dig the rocky ground under the scorching sun. Finally, at the depth of 53 ft, when water oozed out, I was filled with a sense of fulfilment. After digging two more feet, I completed the work. I am happy that my mother now has the respite from having to rush to the public well after coming home from work.”
Wish all mothers had sons like Pavan Kumar. 🙂
