Ileana Talks About A Scarring Incident When 6 Men Followed And Harassed Her In Mumbai Traffic

Eve-teasing is a menace which has grasped the lives of women in its jaws and has refused to let go. Instances of women being eve-teased while travelling alone have increased at an alarming rate and it is infuriating.

A shocking incident has come to light where actress Ileana D’Cruz was eve-teased at a traffic light by six people who were in a car alongside hers, on Sunday.

Ileana was on her way to a fashion show when she was stuck at a traffic light for a few minutes and was recognised by the men who proceeded to follow her car and make lewd gestures at her.

Ileana was accompanied only by a chauffeur which escalated the situation as the men probably noticed she was in a vulnerable situation.

Recalling the horrible ordeal, Ileana told Mumbai Mirror,

“They started banging against the window, pressing themselves against the car, one of them even lying down on the top of the bonnet and laughing. They followed my car even after the signal turned green. It was like a power trip for them.”

She did not want to publicly shame the offenders by taking pictures because she felt that this would encourage them. The lack of an entourage proved to be a huge obstacle for the actress as she did not want to put her chauffeur in any mortal danger, by making him get off the car to deal with the goons.

She rightly justified her move of ignoring them by putting into words, the predicament of the common woman in these situations.

“They could have beaten him up and I wouldn’t have been able to stop them. So the only thing my chauffeur could do was honk while I ignored their antics.”

The actress took to Twitter to vent her fear and frustration over the incident in a series of tweets,

Women clearly aren’t safe anywhere, even while they are travelling for work or for personal events. Eve-teasing has always been a device of domination and it is mental as well as emotional harassment. It is high time we regard it as a crime instead of ignoring it.
