Zara Copied An Indie Designer’s Work And Refused To Compensate As They Have ‘More Followers’

Companies copying designs is not unheard of.

When they are caught, they go to the designer and figure out a way to compensate the designer, or the worst that can happen is they will apologize without paying and take their merchandise off the stores.

But when Tuesday Bassen got to know that her designs were blatantly copied by the popular clothing store Zara, she was stunned by the store’s reaction to the copyright accusation.

Apparently, Zara rejected the copyright claims, citing the reason that THEY HAD MORE FOLLOWERS THAN HER.

That’s right. It is like your neighbour steals your dog, and then when you go to confront him, he just says that HE HAS MORE INTERNET FOLLOWERS, so buzz off, the dog is MINE!

The 27-year-old designer is quite successful on the design market, where she has collaborated with Adidas and Nike.

Here is what Zara wrote to the independent designer –

‘We reject your claims here for reasons similar to those stated above: the lack of distinctiveness of your client’s purported designs makes it very hard to see how a significant part of the population anywhere in the world would associate the signs with Tuesday Bassen,’

‘Please note that such [third party] notifications amount to a handful of complaints only…millions of users worldwide visit the respective websites monthly (Zara: 98,000.000 average monthly visits last year..)’

Tuesday Bassen says that she is disappointed with Zara’s response to her official complaint in an interview to HuffPost.

“Their lawyers claim that my work is both ‘too simple’ to defend, and that I have no base because I am a small artist with 90,000 followers on Instagram while they are a major corporation with 90 million people, so only ‘a handful of people’ would notice the designs are mine,”

Apparently, this is not the first time Zara has lifted off designs from random places.

Not cool Zara, not cool!
