There was a short circuit in the indoor stadium, that was built in 1978, and was inundated since the onset of monsoon. The condition of the stadium, which has the office of the Jharkhand State Wrestling Association (JSWA), has worsened due to heavy rains in the past couple of weeks.

Vishal, who started his wrestling career in 2005, came fourth in the last senior national wrestling championship. Bholanath Singh, general secretary, and coach of the JSWA told Zee News:

“It is extremely unfortunate. I don’t know why he went to the office which is sunk in deep waters. The situation of the stadium is pathetic and the building is in ruins. We have demanded ₹ 10 lakh compensation from the government for the kin of Kumar.”

The board has announced ₹ one lakh interim relief to the bereaved family. The association will also give ₹ 10,000 every month to them till one of Kumar’s four sisters finds a job.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that death was due to electrocution. Vishal was using a water pump to clear out the water when the incident took place. Faulty wiring seems to be main cause for this incident.”

But, the Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam (JBVNL) general manager Ganesh Jha said that there was no problem on the connection provided to by the electricity board.

“An executive engineer visited the site and reported that there is no fault in the power connection provided by JBVNL. However, there could be a loose connection in the building’s internal electrical wiring.”

This is so saddening. Vishal was trying to get the water out of the premises and this happened to him. The sports authorities need to maintain the infrastructure properly and have better management in place.
