Twitter is the magical land where anything can happen. One minute people will be gushing over an emotional viral thread and talking about how their faith in humanity is restored. And the next minute, the same Tweeple will be trolling a celebrity or a politician, shaking that very faith in humanity again.
There’s love here, and knowledge; appreciation and criticism; a place to voice your opinions, and the very place to get trashed for it. And all this probably is what makes Twitter worth joining for its users.
For yet another inexplicable reason yesterday, #WhyIJoinedTwitter began trending and people were stating their reasons to join the platform. Naturally, Twitter’s official account too got on board!
#WhyIJoinedTwitter is trending. We’re curious. Let’s hear it.
— Twitter (@Twitter) August 1, 2018
And it was quite the barrage of reasons! From wanting to stalk their favourite celebrity (K-Pop and South superstars were winning big here!) to escaping family on Facebook, people’s reasons were all over the place!
But I came across some rib-tickling ones that I think you’ll want to LOL at and totally relate to as well!
Have a looksie!
IRL is a sux! Twitter is where you should go if you’re masochist!
#WhyIJoinedTwitter Because people in my real life weren’t enraging me enough.
— Bryan Behar (@bryanbehar) August 1, 2018
Now this one? I totally agree with. Sometimes things haven’t even happened yet and the news is up on Twitter!
To get fast updates. Faster than even TV channels.
— Sheheryar Muhammad Khan (@sherrymk75) August 1, 2018
Fake news, okay? I was taking a dig at fake news, ICYMI.
Hahahahaha you’re not alone! We all thought that!
#WhyIJoinedTwitter because I was stupid enough to think that if I tweet to my fav celebs, they’d reply back to me instantly ha ha ha

Hey Ryan Reynolds, I’m still waiting for you to accept my marriage proposal! Dude WTF?
An expected majority of people confessed the real reason they came to Twitter: It was getting too difficult to breathe freely on Facebook!

Facebook kam, family album zyada!

The rebel-safe platform!
Back in 2011, Twitter was the only platform where none of my acquaintances were on. Orkut was flooded. So, I thought I could tweet the rebellious thoughts in my mind here, without being discovered! #WhyIJoinedTwitter https://t.co/4PT4596KC7

Some sinister folks just came here to hide their vices….

And some people just wanted to bait the Grammar Nazis!
So people can critique my spelling, punctuation, usage and sentence structure.

But mostly it was a whole load of….
#WhyIJoinedTwitter I couldn’t afford therapy and I needed to rant
— J (@liljthings) August 2, 2018
Which totally leads me to this startling realisation:

Damn right, it is! Sometimes, Twitter conversations are just so cathartic!
But see, I think some people just wanted to see the world burn!
I wanted to disappoint more than one person at a time.

You found the perfect place, sweetie!
Another person who found the perfect place? This one!
#WhyIJoinedTwitter When cheap politicians and desperate_wannabes were having pleasure in Twitter trends. I came here to laugh at their illusions!!
— Gitanjali (@MynameisGitaa) August 2, 2018
Okay geeks and introverts, takes notes!
#WhyIJoinedTwitter so I could favourite girls tweets as a way of flirting instead of approaching them in real life
— Tom Hughes (@tomhughesy) August 1, 2018
And chances are this didn’t do much to promote IRL social interaction anyway?
Yeah why not? Jo free mein mila toh use karne ka!
I’m not even joking #WhyIJoinedTwitter pic.twitter.com/SL0ie2QdyW

I keep finding these people who wanted to self-inflict harm, like what? Oh wait. That was sarcasm!
Because I needed someone with a car profile picture to tell me to eat shit and die every time I gave my opinion. #WhyIJoinedTwitter
— Tony Posnanski (@tonyposnanski) August 1, 2018
Right, yeah. I came to Twitter for the sarcasm!
You’ll probably witness a medical miracle or two about how despite a bonkers blood pressure, all it will take to calm you down is a thread full of cat videos!

Amazingly enough, brands too jumped on this bandwagon, and did really good!
Because, you know, it’s kinda their job?
Someone had to go around and show all those other, lesser canyons who's boss. #WhyIJoinedTwitter

For the mental health benefits. #WhyIJoinedTwitter
— comedycentral (@ComedyCentral) August 1, 2018
But hey, it wasn’t all dank and sarcastic! There were some really good, positive reasons too!
I started my account when I finally escaped an abusive 5 year controlling relationship and finally free to get a social media account. I found friends who accept and support me, friends I come here to see everyday. ❤️🙏🏼#WhyIJoinedTwitter
— Nic ⛓🖤 (@OerbaYunNic) August 2, 2018
Awww! What did I tell ya? Twitter can be such a softie!
But I think many of you will agree with this one the most!
https://twitter.com/Beeblebrroxx/status/1024916897194598400
Sawaaal!
But hey, let’s just end this on a very hopeful note, mostly because Twitter does act like a good boy from time to time (or we might just be too addicted, honestly I can’t even tell anymore!).
#WhyIJoinedTwitter
Because there's a vast amount of intellectual horsepower and general hilarity on Twitter if you follow good people.— Geoffrey Miller (@primalpoly) August 1, 2018
So now you know #WhyIJoinedTwitter! Wanna tell me your reason?
