Shopkeepers Selling Water And Cold Drinks Above MRP May Land In Jail Or Pay ₹ 25,000 Fine

How much do you pay for your bottled water and the cold drinks you buy so frequently? And how many times you actually check the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on the bottle? Well, this is the reason you should.

Shopkeepers, selling water bottles and cold drinks at a higher price than the MRP, may attract penalty and even land up in jail.

The law against this has been in place since 2009 but there is little awareness about the provisions of this law to protect consumers from charging more than MRP at airports, malls, and multiplexes.

Section 36 of Legal Metrology Act clearly says anyone caught selling, distributing or delivering any pre-packaged commodity that does not conform to the declarations on the package shall be punished with fine up to Rs 25,000 for the first offense.

Consumers affairs minister, Ram Vilas Paswan said even though the act exists, it’s rarely implemented because of this simple flaw.

The next time you buy a bottle, read and enquire.
