It’s daylight robbery. Pure and simple.

But still, we always feel helpless when they charge extra for something as basic as water at cinema halls and airports. The MRP is right there on the packaging label and they still charge you almost double that.

Now, no more. Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has asked companies to sell their water at same MRP – be it the airport or railway station.

This move comes after complaints where one company sold the same bottle at higher prices at airports.

And after this, if anyone is found selling water above MRP, they will be penalized with hefty fines or even a jail term. This means no more of this overpriced nonsense. But the initiative should not be the Government’s alone. The onus is also on us to report defaulters.

“We have sufficient powers to take action against violators and we will take if consumers file complaints in this regard. There is penalty and even jail term for violators.”

The penalty for first-time offenders is Rs. 25,000.

For the second time, the fine is Rs. 50,000.

And if the person still does not learn, the penalty is Rs. 1 lakh and 1-year jail imprisonment.

So, go ahead and ask for water without any worry at airports, cinemas, and malls now. And do not forget to report the defaulters to the National consumer helplines.

The onus is on us too to bring in change.
