The world can be a scary place for little girls. But the one place that is a safe haven is home. Unfortunately, increasing cases of child abuse in the country mean that this isn’t always true. Two minor cousins in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur were repeatedly burnt with tongs. The incident occurred at home and the perpetrators were their family!

But that wasn’t the end of their ordeal. The little girls were made to eat human excreta by their family members. Wondering what their supposed crime was? Well, the family was upset with their association with two boys who studied with them in the same school.

In desperation, they fled to bordering Nepal to escape torture. They were brought back to the town on Tuesday night and presented before the Child Welfare Committee after they refused to go back home with family members. The cousins had burn injuries on their hands. That is when the victims revealed their ordeal to the police and members of the Child Welfare Committee, reports HT.

Sources said Gorakhpur Police had sent their family to Nepal to bring the girls back. However, a call was made by a Nepali non-governmental organisation to city-based NGO Manav Seva Sansthan. This prompted timely action by the latter saved the girls from being handed over again to them.

Pipiganj’s station house officer Dinesh Mishra spoke about their ordeal-

“The victims told us that they were burnt with tongs and force-fed human excreta, for which investigation is underway. One SI with a team of the NGO brought them back to Gorakhpur from Nepal,” shared Mishra.

For now, the victims have been sent to a shelter on the instructions of the committee till a further course of action, police said.

We sure hope the barbaric acts do not go unpunished and the girls have a safer and brighter future!
