Our human body is a wondrous place. It is an ecosystem in itself, an island where everything works like a swiss watch. And completely automatically.
And because we are not conscious of most of the processes at the cellular level, we don’t realize the tremendous amount of work our body is doing every second. Let us take a look at some of the most bizarre things your body does without you even realizing it.
1. You kidneys can smell the urine when they process it
Turns out your whole body smells and tastes everything around you. In your kidneys, a clump of cells called macula densa play the role of scent receptors.
They are literally smelling and tasting the urine it is processing in your body right now.
If you are a man, even your sperm can smell its surroundings.
2. People can live without a number of vital organs like spleen, stomach, and a kidney
The human body is extremely durable and resilient. It can live without one kidney, spleen, uterus, testicles, the whole of the stomach, colon, and appendix.
Yes, you can live without all of the above. You will need medical attention once in a while, but you can surely live on.
3. You had extremely good eyesight when you were a kid
When you were a baby you had superhuman vision. Human babies are known to even distinguish between monkey faces, the same way we distinguish among human faces.
As a child, we were better than any facial recognition technology on the planet.
4. Your body can predict the weather too
In some humans, it has been found that their knees start hurting just before a thunderstorm or bad weather. Similarly, humans get migraines, headaches, and other body pains before the weather went bad. Scientists don’t have a clue why they happen, though.
5. The inner lining of your stomach dies and regenerates every two weeks because of the strong acid it secretes
The acid your stomach secretes is strong enough to even dissolve steel. Then how does your stomach survive it?
That’s because we have a thick layer of mucus that protects the actual lining, and also our stomach is regenerating 3 times as fast as the acid is dissolving it.
6. We fight cancer every day. EVERY DAY.
Our cells are constantly being damaged every day – trillions of them. They get cancerous lesions every day, and your body aims to replace the cancerous DNA as soon they are damaged.
Our bodies are at a constant state of war.
7. Your body can literally hear temperature with the ears
Just by listening to sound alone, we can detect the temperature of liquids.
Scientists believe that it is because we can hear the subtle changes in the viscosity of the liquids, which changes with temperature.
8. 300 billion new cells are created every day
Around 100 million cells die each day in our body. At that rate, we should die in a few days, but our body produces 300 billion new cells every day to replace and replenish the aging ones every day.
You are literally dying and being born every day.
9. Your brains are 2400 times faster than the fastest supercomputer
You have more synapses in your brain than there are stars in our galaxy. Just to put it into perspective, our galaxy has up to 400 billion stars. That means we can compute up to 20 million billion calculations per second.
Supercomputers are shit compared to your brain.
10. Babies’Â brains are triple that fast
When we are born, we have far more synapses per neuron. Actually, we were 3 times as faster when we were babies.
That is the reason we were able to grasp and learn so much in so few years.
11. A baby’s foreskin grows very, very fast and is used to treat burn victims
Also, it can stretch to the size of a basketball court. That is why their foreskins are used to heal burn victims.
12. Your eye muscles contract and relax 100,000 times from sunup to sundown
Your eye muscles collectively contract and expand around 100,000 times in a day. That’s the most active group of muscles in your body. If your leg muscles did the same amount of work, you would be running around 90 kilometers every day.
Our body is a wonderland!
