Here’s An Honest Thank-You Note To My Dad.

“Call me up as soon as you reach home. Okay?”

After 1 missed call, this was the unread message on my phone. It was dad’s. I smiled. I replied with an ‘okay.’ After I left my office and reached home, I called him up.

”Where were you? What took you so long to reach home today?”

”Work, dad!”

”Yeah but it’s pretty late. Try coming home early,” he said in a worried tone.

I replied in a monosyllable and disconnected the phone.

And then I sat back with my usual cup of coffee and thought about my dad. Soon, the train of thoughts led me to my childhood days. I smiled again. I realized how he has gone from my prince charming to my unofficial financial advisor, but through it all, he’s always held a piece of my heart. That’s why he’s the most important man in my life, and will continue to be, until someone quite remarkable comes along. 😛

And today, I want to thank him for standing by me.

His enriched life wisdom on becoming a good human being

He always taught me that marks, career, education are secondary. You have to be a good person first. He taught me to be kind, compassionate, honest, when and how should I put my foot down, laugh without any inhibitions- overall, to be a strong human being.

And now, I end up giving the same advice to my friends!

His career advice on not following the ‘popular opinion’

In a family of engineers and doctors, he often advised me to follow my heart, to pursue what my heart said was right and then fulfilling it. I remember him telling me that he’ll stand by me despite whatever decision I take.

Whenever I was afraid to take a risk, he’d remind me time and again – ”You can do anything!”

When he said yes to things…especially when my mom didn’t

There were times when my mom was skeptical of my decisions, adventures, going out with friends. But my dad always agreed with a silent ”Just be careful!”

When he filled in for my mom

My working mother used to leave the house early morning and my dad used to cook breakfast for me while boasting things like ”Today, you’ll eat the tastiest sandwich.” And he’d end up burning those and serving me fruits or Maggi, instead.

When he taught me how to drive

He sat behind me and taught me how to ride a bicycle, bike and car. These are some special moments that are registered in my mind. 🙂

For showing me what real love is, by the way he treats my mom

My dad has loves my mom. And by doing that, he showed the way a man should treat women. After seeing him, I know what my husband should be like.

When he cracks his ‘dad jokes’

…which mom never finds funny. My dad and I are the only ones who laugh out loud at his jokes, however, lame they are!

My dad has always been the life of the party and though his jokes aren’t always funny (or, ummm, appropriate), he always gets me to crack a grin. And every time I go like ”Daaaaaaaaaadd!”

For making me smile when I’m cranky

I often get cranky because I’m very moody. Whenever my dad senses that over the phone, he’ll send me adorable texts and images so that I can laugh and get over my spoiled mood. And his lame jokes (sorry dad!) work…every time! And then his message that says, ”The best day of my life was when you were born.”

When he turns into a financial advisor

He’s unofficially my financial advisor. Every time any kind of problem comes up at any point of my day or night, I call up my dad without any second thoughts. And needless to say, I get the best advice. He also manages my bank accounts because I suck at it!

For being the first man my brother looked up to

Enough said.

For all the fun things he built and helped us with, like tree houses

Okay, this was for my school project and I remember my dad participating the most and successfully making a tree house. And now, that tree house hangs in my drawing room. He had also made a water storage pot for birds out of a coke bottle.

Being the first love of my life

He taught me what love is and pampered me like crazy. He made sure all my demands were met, however, unreasonable they sounded to my mom. The love of my life will always come second because no one can ever take his place. Period.

And lastly, for not letting me forget how loved I am

In good times and in bad times, he has my back. However insurmountable my problems are, he has always been there.

Though I cannot limit my feelings to these points, I can say that these are the main things why he remains my hero and a role model till today. And I don’t need a Father’s day to thank him for his presence in my life. As I sit here and finish this piece, I get another text message by my dad.

”Reached home?”
