Remember the 2005 movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli’ featuring con-artistes as partners-in-crime? Recently, a couple in Thane carried out a carefully-scripted con job which seems to be heavily inspired by the flick. Read on to know more.
As per a report in TOI, the con couple duped a trader of Rs. 4 lakh by selling them a fake gold necklace and concocting an emotional story while tricking him. “The accused had approached the victim saying that they had a necklace that was unearthed from their ancestral property in Vapi, Gujarat. They then told him that they were selling the necklace at a price that was lower than the market rate as they faced financial problems,” said Wagle Estate police station’s API Arvind Wulvi.
The couple first showed the trader 2 real gold beads claiming it to be part of the necklace, in order to win his confidence. Upon verifying the authenticity of the beads, he fell for the pursuance of the couple, and agreed to purchase the entire necklace from them.
In a bid to seal the seemingly good deal, as the couple sought only Rs. 4 lakh for the necklace, which was much less than the market value of the heavy ornamental necklace, the trader bought it without checking the authenticity of the entire necklace.
It was much later that the trader realized that he had been conned. He approached the Wagle Estate police station to register a complaint.
