In Indian Textbooks, one finds things that are true specimens of stuff you’d never teach your kids. From their trying to demonstrate a science experiment by putting a kitten in a box to ugliness being cited as a reason for dowry, you’d find elements of absurdity in them. Like, loads of them.
Now, class VI Integrated Science textbook is under the scanner for listing a Mosque-like structure as a noise pollutant.
It was originally tweeted by Zulqarnain Bhaisaheb, who questioned does azaan cause noise pollution?
6th Std ICSE textbook shows causes of Noise Pollution with d MOSQUE. WT does it mean? AZAAN causes NOISE POLLUTION? #NarendraModi #PMO #HRD pic.twitter.com/eQP19n7Ik6

We are instinctively reminded of Sonu Nigam’s azaan row.
Soon, Twitter started pouring in reactions and it got the attention.
The #Selina Publishers should be banned from supplying books to school. #ICSE act on it. This is spreading hatred and nuisance.@PMOIndia pic.twitter.com/IsdBWShzrs

As someone who studied in ICSE school & thought board's textbooks were cut above rest, this from Selina Publishers is pretty crappy: pic.twitter.com/1f7A8P27U8

In the meantime, a petition, by Masood Pasha, started doing rounds. It demanded the removal of the pictorial that shows noise pollution from various sources, a mosque-like structure being one of them. The petition got more than 6000 supporters till Sunday.
The book is published by Selina Publishers and the publishers have, in a note, expressed regret and promised to remove the pictorial.
We do apologise if it hurt the sentiments of anyone; We will be changing the picture : SELINA PUBLISHERS pic.twitter.com/6vQRn1wu25

The board (CISCE) maintained that it is an issue school should deal with because it doesn’t publish or prescribe textbooks. Waiving responsibilities?
Are we really teaching this to our kids?
