A Cloud Tsunami Stretched Over Sydney Sky Last Friday And The Internet Gaped In Wonder

Today is Friday the 13th, but something pretty scary happened last Friday in Sydney, Australia. A seven-kilometer long wave was seen stretching across the Bondi Beach sky. The ‘shelf cloud’ lead to weather warning predicting thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds in the surrounding areas.

What is a shelf cloud?

Forecaster Christopher Webb explained, “When the rain from the thunderstorm comes vertically down it drags the air with it, it spreads horizontally and forms a gust front, you get the humid air being lifted abruptly from the outflow of the thunderstorm.”
