Swara Bhasker’s Response To A Parody Account On Fake News About Her Makes Absolute Sense

We live in the realms of fake news and thanks to social media, there is no stopping it.

I mean, in a sea of Whatsapp forwards and unscrupulous ‘Breaking’ headlines, the line between real and fake is blurred. And the chances of falling prey to these unverified claims is more often than you think. Like biased media outlets weren’t enough, we have parody (read troll accounts) that open gates to incessant cyber-trolling, because let’s admit it, who waits to read first?

In fact, parody handle @republicTv recently tweeted something (they thought it was funny) about Swara Bhasker which could be read as a dig after her ‘vagina’ open letter that went viral earlier.

It read,

I feel reduced to ‘a burning woman’ whenever I see people celebrating #RamNavami, the birth of Rama who asked Sita for agni pariksha: Swara Bhaskar

First, it can mislead people because the handle name is almost identical to the Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV and secondly, it can incite communal disharmony and religious intolerance.

Which is exactly what it did.

Needless to say, Swara was again subjected to a lot of hate and filth for some ‘satire’ that people do not have a stomach for. But she decided not to sit quite and tweeted,

And while the profile of the handle clarified that @republicTv is a parody account & tweets are fake.. Judging from the RTs I thought I should clarify that I NEVER SAID THIS.. FAKE!!!!! Apparently satire but honestly guys I get enough hate without help from you 🙂 https://t.co/4otscm5P32

Given the climate of bigotry and the times we live in, Swara’s words ring in the reality we need to adhere to. I mean, even journalists will lose accreditations for spreading/planting anything but the truth now, why should self-proclaimed absurdity be tolerated?
