“Salman Didn’t Want To Do Prem Ratan Dhan Payo With Me.” Sonam Bares Life’s Unspoken Truths

Sonam Kapoor is a widely acclaimed fashionista. She made her debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya with Ranbir Kapoor. Her counterpart, Deepika Padukone was launched the same day.

Sonam Kapoor has done 14 films compared to Deepika who has done 30. While Aisha, which was not a commercially successful film led her to the image of a major style icon, films like Delhi-6, Ranjhana and especially Neerja brought her accolades as a talented actor.

In a recent interview with Huffington Post, Sonam talks about how for the longest time, she was fighting an inner conflict on being privileged and that led her to not accept anything from her father out of guilt. 

“It took me a while to shake that off because I was surrounded by people who constantly made me feel like I was some entitled brat.”

But now she has realized that it was an unfair and an inappropriate judgment that she was entrusting upon herself.

 

Sonam says because of Anil Kapoor’s reputation, she has been deprived of a lot of good projects because most of the Bollywood heroes today are good friends with her father. She says; 

“Salman Khan didn’t want to do Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with me. He was like, ‘Anil Kapoor has been my close friend. How can I romance his daughter?’ It was really difficult and weird.”

Sonam also says that all the projects she did, had people who were good acquaintances with her father,  but none of them hired her because she came from the Kapoor family.

 

On being asked on screen test and auditions, she says; 

Every film that she has ever worked in, she says were offered to her solely because of her merit. Farah Khan is best friends with her mother, but she says. “I haven’t done a Farah film, nor does she look at me as an actress she’d want to cast. It’s a different, non-work relationship.”

 

She says that it doesn’t matter if you have relations inside or outside the industry. Making big depends on talent. 

There are a lot of things that people end up assuming about the star kids. Their accomplishments are called privileges because they come from big families. Her life has been under the same microscope for a long time. But nothing of that sort deters Sonam from working hard as an actress.
