A Polish Olympian Sold His Rio Silver Medal To Save 3-Year-Old Battling Cancer. What A Hero!

To any athlete, an Olympic medal is the highest reward for all the hard work they put in. They run faster, jump higher and train harder for a place on the coveted podium so that they could hear the national anthem being played. Of course, the medal is going to be the most precious belonging to any athlete.

Piotr Malachowski, a Polish athlete, personified selflessness when he chose to donate the silver medal he won at the Rio Olympics to save the life of a 3-year-old baby suffering from cancer.

Piotr Malachowski won his second silver medal in the discus throw, repeating his silver performance again after the 2012 Olympics.

 

The boy, Olek, is suffering from Retinoblastoma, a cancer that affects the eye. Olek has been battling this cancer for the last two years. His mother wrote to Piotr for help and support.

 

Piotr readily accepted and decided to auction off his medal. He also appealed to people on his facebook account to help him save Olek.

“If you help me, my silver medal may turn out to be more precious than gold for Olek”

 

His endeavor garnered a lot of support and reportedly raised enough money for little Olek’s treatment.

Out of joy, Piotr said,

“My silver medal is worth a lot more than a week ago. It is worth the health of little Olek.”

Sometimes, you have to sacrifice the glory we achieve to do good for the others, and that is exactly what Piotr did.

After all, saving a life is certainly better than winning a medal.
