There are almost 200 countries in the world. However, only a select few have been lucky enough to host the monuments that classify as the 7 wonders of the world. Thanks to Shah Jahan, India is one of them. The Taj Mahal has been a matter of pride for us all. Moreover, it stands as a symbol of undying love and devotion.
However, as with everything, we have been negligent of this architectural marvel. With increased pollution and a severe lack of proper maintenance, the Taj has been losing its signature pristine beauty.
Exasperated by the state of affairs, the Supreme Court yesterday slammed the Central and Uttar Pradesh government, asking them to either shut down or demolish or restore the Taj.
According to the Indian Express, the SC said:
“Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it. Eighty million go to watch Eiffel Tower, which looks like a TV Tower. Our Taj is more beautiful.”
The court made the statement during the hearing of a petition that asked for proper maintenance of the marble structure. The Centre responded to the SC’s admonition, stating that a team of researchers from IIT Kanpur have been studying the source of pollution near the Mughal era structure, and would submit a report within 4 months.
The Supreme Courts ruling has sent Twitter folk into a panic at the prospect of possibly losing the world wonder:
1. The cost of us all turning a blind eye.
On the #TajMahal turning green-brown, the Indian Supreme Court has pulled up the government- 'Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it. Do you realise the loss cost to the country due to your apathy?'

3. This may turn into reality sooner than later if we’re not careful.
Demolish the Taj and everything else too. Let's go back to living like apes, since we are now at least behaving like them as well.#TajMahal

6. Prevention is better than cure, after all.
Woah, Indian Supreme Court decision on Taj Mahal is truly comendable. While at it, find a stern way to make visitors more responsible towards historic monuments too, like higher littering fines, no spitting, etc ? #TajMahal

8. Save the Taj Mahal!
Save the Taj Mahal! This monument has always captured my imagination since I was a little girl. I may never get to see it in person but I would be terribly sad to know the Taj Mahal was gone forever in my dreams of India.

Can't protect women, can't protect life, can't protect economy… now can't protect monuments!#SupremeCourt threatens to shut down Taj Mahal unless Center & UP Govt. get serious about protecting it!#BharatBachao #TajMahal #BJP_भगाओ_देश_बचाओhttps://t.co/U6un1MEZpH

10. Maybe that’ll help.
Why not rename Taj Mahal as Jio Mahal & see the difference

11. Troubling indeed.
😕🕌
This is troubling news – and how much longer can this iconic monument sustain up to 70,000 visitors per /day/ without suffering long term damage? 🙏🕊India government is 'failing' to protect Taj Mahal. https://t.co/ijAAl4HTS4

12. Same. Actually, let’s not bring it to that, shall we?
I gotta go see the Taj Mahal before they demolish it.

Though the Supreme Court called the maintenance attempts of the Taj Mahal by the authorities a “lost cause”, it is in fact very worrying to think of the possible demolition of this monumental structure. We hope India never has to see a day where the Taj Mahal is no more.
