In the digital age, privacy has always been a huge matter of concern for the citizens of India. Moreover, with Aadhar made mandatory, the privacy of individuals was at stake because the biometric data could have led to the formation of a surveillance state. After the Triple Talaq verdict, Indians again have a reason to celebrate as the Supreme Court of India comes through with another landmark judgement.
In a historical judgement today, the Supreme Court of India with a nine-judge constitutional bench, has declared that the Right to Privacy is now a fundamental right and is protected under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The impacts of this decision are supposed to be humongous as it can change the way Article 377, which entails that Homosexuality and oral sex are a criminal offence, is implemented. The verdict will also impact the much controversial issue of Aadhar being made mandatory, which has remained a bone of contention between the citizens and the government.
The verdict has the internet speculating and celebrating, with a lot of people also questioning the “reasonable restrictions” and waiting with bated breath for further details.

The judgement has provoked mixed reactions from people with many people accepting the verdict with open arms, while some are picking out the negatives. It will be interesting to see the fine print the Supreme Court will provide the citizens, along with the decision.
