80K Students Failed In English In Punjab Due To ‘Lake’ Of Teachers’ Knowledge

More than 80,000 students failed in English in class 10 board exam this year in Punjab. The astonishing reason behind this? Their teachers!

To investigate the reason behind such disastrous results, Education Minister Daljeet Singh Cheema took a special class in the auditorium of Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) in Mohali, for ten English teachers from each district that got the poorest results. The results shocked him. Turned out, most of the teachers who held masters degree in English, could not even construct a complete sentence, let alone spell words! Most of them wrote ‘vacent’ instead of vacant, ‘lake’ for lack, and ‘eight’ became eaght.

Mr. Cheema also asked each of the teachers to fill a pro forma, citing why their students failed in the exam and to give suggestions to improve results in future. These were later showed on the projector. One of the teachers from Fatehgarh Sahib suggested, “It class was very weak class from 6 by chance.” Meaning, the students were weak, and it was not his fault.

The Minister, both shocked and worried at his findings, said that soon reputed organizations like Cambridge would be approached by Punjab government to train English teachers.

Maybe we need to start teaching our teachers before they start teaching the students, armed with their ‘lake’ of knowledge!
