There are no two ways about the fact that it takes more than just knowledge to be a doctor, a good one. While years of learning is just the beginning, it is virtues like patience and perseverance that makes the practice of medicine what it is. But hey, I’m not here to preach. In fact, I’m here to introduce you to a man who exemplifies everything said above.
Meet Dr Balwant Ghatpande who recently celebrated his 102nd birthday and became one of the oldest practising doctors in India.Â
He turned 102 on 15th March 2017. And If you thought it’s only his age that is praise-worthy, you are wrong!
Dr Balwant, even till date, has no plans of retiring and works tirelessly for about 10 hours a day, 7 days a week. He told Hindustan Times,
“I would never retire. Until my death, I wish to continue to practice medicine. I pray that I should die while working in the dispensary.”
Apparently, he owes his energy to a strict routine, exercise and discipline.
Talking about his work ethics he said,Â
When he is not working, Dr Balwant is either engrossed in his medical journals or reading newspapers.
Surprisingly, that’s not the end of it. According to his son, Sawanand Ghatpande, he charges a meagre amount of Rs 30 per patient and also donates most of his earnings to charity.
If this isn’t inspiring what is? FYI his entire family is filled with doctors who abide by the same principle. Honestly, wish we had more like him.
