For A Greener Country, Philippines Passes Law Where Students Must Plant 10 Trees Each To Graduate!

The students of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Which is why educational institutions are trying to shape these young minds and turn them into informed and responsible citizens. For instance, a school in Guwahati is accepting plastic waste as school fees in a bid to protect the environment.

Now, the Philippines has mandated that school and college students must plant 10 trees each before they can graduate.

According to Forbes, the “Graduation Legacy For the Environment Act” states that,

“To this end, the educational system shall be a locus for propagating ethical and sustainable use of natural resources among the young to ensure the cultivation of a socially-responsible and conscious citizenry.”

The Evening Standard quoted representative Gary Alejano (author of the bill) saying,

“With over 12 million students graduating from elementary and nearly five million students graduating from high school and almost 500,000 graduating from college each year, this initiative, if properly implemented, will ensure that at least 175 million new trees would be planted each year.”

The Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that all schools and colleges follow the law. Also, they are to see that local varieties of trees are planted in appropriate locations after giving due thought to climatic and soil conditions.

Don’t you think this law should be implemented in India as well?
