Girl Shares How Her Parents Ran A Contest Amongst Friends & Family To Decide On Her Name

Coming up with a baby name is like trying to find the perfect piece of samosa at a kinara shop – there are endless options and everyone has an opinion! Especially in India, where many young couples live with their families, the pressure of deciding on one particular name can be quite a task. While your grandma chooses a traditional name, your sibling chooses a rather trendy one. It’s madness!

However, a user on X @mrinininininini shared how her parents ran a competition amongst their friends and family to come up with a baby name for her back in 1998. They promised the participants a “gala dinner” and asked for 5 boy names and 5 girl names from each. She shared a picture of a letter/email that was sent to their inner circle.

“We are glad to announce that we are running a competition for the best baby names with a grand gala dinner at a place of your* choice as the first prize! To avail of this irresistible offer, without wasting any more time, scratch your brains (if you have any), put pen on paper, start jotting down, and email it to us at the earliest. There should be a minimum of five names each for boys and girls to qualify for this scheme,” the letter read.

It was further mentioned, “The results shall be announced during April’98 and separate dinner invitations shall be sent to the winners by post immediately thereafter. In the event of a tie, there will be a draw of lots and the eventual winner shall be picked by…who else – the baby himself/herself! So get cracking and may the best name win!”

“The coolest fact about me is that my parents ran a contest among their friends and family to decide what they would name me,” the girl wrote on X.
