Bad News For Pani Puri Lovers In Vadodara Because ‘Gol Gappes’ Are Banned

India is a fan of fast foods. We’ve a variety of them which ranges from steamed dumplings to masala dosas. However, the only fast food that is a consistent hit throughout all the seasons are pani puris. Be it in sweltering heat, tumultuous rain or bone-chillingly cold, if there’s a pani puri stand, you’ll definitely see people rushing to eat there. That said, the residents of Vadodara will be missing out on the “delicacy” for some time now.

According to India Today, the municipal corporation of Vadodara has put a temporary ban on the sale of pani puris effective immediately.

The monsoon season usually brings a ton of diseases along with it that are water related. The civic body said that since there’s a high chance that those pani puris are made in unhygienic conditions, the effect of those diseases can increase ten-fold.

If you think this is a sudden decision, it’s not. The municipal corporation had raided several places across Vadodara and had found the state in which pani puris are made. And after careful analysis, they came to the conclusion that one of the effective ways of preventing the spread of diseases like typhoid, jaundice and food poisoning is by banning gol gappes.

Just announcing a ban in India isn’t enough. Implementing it effectively is the real task and the health department got to it almost instantaneously.

As soon as the ban was announced, the health department of Vadodara Municipal Corporation hit the streets in search of pani puri stalls. They managed to throw away thousands of kilograms of spoiled flour, rancid oil, rotten tomatoes and stinking water. And yes, all of that is used to make your favourite fast food.

Until the day was over, the municipal corporation of Vadodara announced that they had raided at least 50 manufacturers of pani puris who were spread all across the town. Additionally, they said that they had thrown out 4000kgs of puris, 3500kgs of potatoes and kabuli chana, and 1200ltrs of acidic water. If that hurts, it shouldn’t because if it wasn’t for them, the residents of Vadodara would’ve been gobbling that garbage.

The Vadodara municipal corporation has asked all food businesses to not sell pani puris till the end of the season. And as I’m not a fan of street/fast food, I highly support this move. Because the only way to make our cities clean is by accepting the reality and changing it effectively.
