Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ was an incredible phenomenon that we witnessed this year. Not only was it a worldwide blockbuster and a cultural reset, but to watch a comedy film about patriarchy become the highest-grossing movie ever directed by a woman is the stuff of legends. Everybody anticipated that Greta Gerwig would definitely receive an Oscar nomination for Best Director, if not an Oscar itself, and Margot Robbie would be nominated for ‘Best Actress’. However, the Oscar nominations for 2024 have come out and it’s such a massive disappointment.
Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two women who are the most responsible for turning ‘Barbie’ into a phenomenon, didn’t receive Oscar nominations for their respective categories.
Yes, ‘Barbie’ did receive a total of 8 nominations, including ‘Best Picture’, but the fact that Ryan Gosling got nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role as Ken and Gerwig and Robbie missed out on the nominations has left people scratching their heads. So much so, that Ryan Gosling published an official statement in which he wrote “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”
“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius,” the statement read.
Here’s a look at his full statement:
People online have been slamming the Academy for snubbing Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. Here’s what some of them have been saying. Have a look:
Greta Gerwig: Made a critically acclaimed, culturally profound, feminist movie about Barbie and the patriarchy that made a billion dollars at the box office.
Oscar nomination goes to … Ken. #Barbie #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/mQ8xlYPzc3

greta gerwig being snubbed at the #Oscars despite barbie being the ONLY $1 billion movie solely directed by a woman feels VERY sus to me… pic.twitter.com/cjzqkmOzYU

No nom for Greta Gerwig? Can that actually be true?

the way #GretaGerwig basically single handedly saved cinema with Barbie this year and was not nominated for best director has me like pic.twitter.com/DAI01YSafS

Greta Gerwig made a film that was critically acclaimed, culturally impactful, hilarious, unique, visually exceptional, perfectly cast and acted, left people laughing, crying and thinking AND made a billion dollars at the box office. But no Best Director nom?! #Barbie #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/ePfuiDbEfm

So Greta Gerwig created one of the most original films of the decade, one that completely blew apart people’s expectations of what a #Barbie movie could be & resonated with millions … yet apparently that’s not *quite* worth a nomination for best director??? #Oscars2024 pic.twitter.com/UXbm4zrdIy

Ryan Gosling, while deserving, got an Oscar nomination for Barbie while Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t? Completely proving the point of the movie in 20 fucking 24 you cannot make this up #Oscars2024 #Oscars pic.twitter.com/EvnPJcP8Xn

I'm sorry but the straight white guy in Barbie got nominated and not the ACTUAL WOMEN WHO MADE THE MOVIE??? #Oscars2024 are a total scam, Greta Gerwig & Margot Robbie were done so dirty pic.twitter.com/yjG2swb8yV

I don't pay much attention to award shows.
But Ryan Gosling getting a nomination and Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig NOT getting nominations feels like something happening in the Barbie movie to further illustrate the point of the Barbie movie. pic.twitter.com/T9uFEyiKOz

Fun game. When someone is explaining why #Barbie got nominated for best picture but #GretaGerwig didn’t get nominated for best director, repeat their EXACT argument back to them but replace Barbie with #Oppenheimer and Greta with #ChristopherNolan and watch their heads explode. pic.twitter.com/TClgO2ViXG

barbie getting 8 oscar nominations but not giving greta gerwig her well deserved best director nomination showcasing once again why the movie was necessary and perfectly done because how can you snub the director of the highest grossing movie of the year

The iconic Barbie monologue delivered by the brilliant, Oscar nominated @AmericaFerrera really rings true after the movie’s director, Greta Gerwig, was passed over for an Oscar nomination … even though the movie she created was nominated for Best Picture. pic.twitter.com/cJ0FygrLPE
