UP Bride Called Off Wedding As Groom Couldn’t Read A Hindi Newspaper Without His Glasses

Some say that your wedding is the biggest day of your life and these magical events are celebrated with great gusto. Nevertheless, people have called off weddings for various bizarre reasons in the past. Remember when a UP bride called off her wedding when the groom couldn’t recite the 2-times table?

Well another unique incident occurred in Uttar Pradesh’s Auraiya where a marriage was called off at the last minute. It all began when Arjun Singh of Jamalpur village planned his daughter Archana’s match with Shivam, of Banshi village, reports News18. The belief that Shivam was a “well-educated boy” appealed to Singh and the ‘Shagun’ ceremony was performed.

Father of the bride-to-be reported that things changed on the day of the wedding. “When the Baraat procession came to the house on June 20, the groom was constantly seen wearing spectacles the whole time.”

The Singh family suspected the boy had weak eyesight. The bride then asked the groom to read a Hindi newspaper without his glasses. Although he was allegedly not illiterate, he failed at this task.

Upon learning that Shivam could not see without his glasses, Archana refused to marry him. Everyone respected her decision and called off the wedding. They then demanded the groom’s side return dowry given in the form of cash and a motorcycle in addition to all expenses incurred in the wedding preparations. When Shivam’s family refused to comply, an FIR was lodged against them at a police station in Auraiya Kotwali.

What do you think of the bride’s decision? Is poor eyesight reason enough to call off the wedding?
