Nepal PM Says Yoga Originated In Nepal & Not In India, Sparks Heated Debate Online

Last year, the Prime Minister of Nepal, KP Sharma Oli, had claimed that Ayodhya, which is believed to be Lord Ram’s birthplace, is actually a “small village” near Kathmandu. His statement received a lot of backlash from Indians.

A year later, the Nepal Prime Minister made another controversial claim. According to NDTV, KP Sharma Oli said that yoga originated in Nepal, not in India, and that India didn’t exist at the time when yoga started in the world.

“Much before the existence of India as a nation, yoga was practised in Nepal. When yoga was discovered, India had not been constituted. There was no country like India then; there were just several fringe states. So, yoga originated in Nepal or around Uttarakhand. Yoga did not originate in India, he said.

India Today quoted him adding,

“We never gave credit to our sages who discovered yoga. We could not put our claim (on yoga) rightly. We could not take it across the globe.”

His statement sparked a huge debate online. While there were many who argued against his claim, some responded with funny memes! Have a look:
