“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” – Hamlet.
Indeed, there are so many things just on the earth itself that are yet to be discovered. Just because you haven’t seen something, doesn’t mean it cannot exist, does it? Like these 11 creatures, they might exist or they might not, but they would definitely not let you come to a final conclusion.
1. Yeti
From the Himalayan mountains, comes stories of a larger than the tallest human, furry white ape-like creature that walks on two feet. This creature is commonly known as the Yeti or the Abominable Snowman. According to local legends and mountaineers from around the world, this creature is often spotted among the frost covered mountain tops in the Himalayan regions. Even though scientists consider Yeti to be born out of legends, various evidence like footsteps on snow, suggest otherwise!
2. Loch Ness Monster
Also known as Nessie, the Brontosaurus like ‘monster’ of Scottish lake Loch Ness has been in the news since 1933, when it was first rumoured to be seen. Though the evidence, photographic or otherwise, have not been able to come to any concrete conclusion, people keep on believing in its existence and reporting rumoured sightings.
3. Megalania Prisca
These are giant goanna or monitor lizards, often more than 30 feet long and were a part of southern Australia during the Pleistocene. Though they are now extinct, according to science, people often report sightings in the Australian wilderness.
4. Chupacabra
Chupacabra or the “goat-sucker,” was rumoured to be first seen in Puerto Rico in the mid-90s. This dog-like creature is said to be about 3 to 5 feet tall, with a row of spikes down its back and possess alien-like eyes. It is like a vampire, as it supposedly sucks the blood out of its preys (mostly small animals like goats, sheeps etc). It is said to be either an alien or a product of cross genetic experiments. Sightings have been reported ever since.
5. Yowie
Another fabled creature from Australia is the Yowie, an ape-like cousin of the Himalayan Yeti. This creature has long existed in the aboriginal myths and lores. Despite many reported sightings, the existence of this creature is still not proven. Also, the varying details of its shape and size question its existence to a large extent.
6. Champ
Champ is the rumoured lake monster living in Lake Champlain in North America. This creature looks a lot like the Loch Ness monster and was first mentioned in 1609. There have been over 300 sightings of Champ though no solid evidence has been found yet to prove its existence.
7. Mermaid
Who doesn’t know what a mermaid is? A beautiful maiden with the lower body of a fish, mermaids have existed in myths and folklores since ancient times. Often associated with floods and storms, and leading ships to the wreckage, mermaids are said to be extremely drawn towards human beings. Hans Christian Andersen’s short story “The Little Mermaid” made this fabled being immortal.
8. Montauk Monster
An extremely strange creature washed up on a beach in Montauk in the USA in July 2008. A photo of the four-legged, clawed, nearly hairless animal garnered a lot of attention from people while being circulated around the web. Though many people thought it was a hoax, others believed that it was an unknown, possibly genetically modified animal. The body of the weird dead creature also vanished mysteriously.
9. Mokèlé-mbèmbé
This is a legendary creature living in the Congo River basin. It is rumoured to look somewhat like the monster of Loch Ness. The legends about this creature have been in existence for almost 200 years. Despite many expeditions to find Mokèlé-mbèmbé, no hard evidence has been found yet.
10. Ogopogo
According to legends, Ogopogo looks a lot like the Pokemon Gyarados if you are familiar with the Pokemon. The home of this creature is said to be Okanagan Lake in Canada’s British Columbia. It was in the 19th century that Ogopogo was first rumoured to have surfaced. Looks like Canada’s version of the Loch Ness monster, eh?
So little we know of the world we live in!
