Mumbai Railway Police Constable Caught Molesting Woman, Angry Crowd Thrash Him Up

It wasn’t that long ago that the Me Too movement took over Hollywood and the Internet. Even though what set it off occurred in Hollywood, its waves echoed across the world. Millions of women spoke up for the first time ever about their experiences of being violated. It was also probably the first time ever that the Internet saw something so genuine on such a global scale. It opened up conversations that had never been had before. For women, it was a solemn nod of solidarity, a ‘you’re not alone’. For men, who saw almost half if not all of their female friends, say “me too”, it was an eye-opener as to the severity of the issue.

Times are changing and we, with it. And those who do not comprehend that they will no longer be allowed to get away with their disgusting deeds will pay for it. A lesson, a constable from Mumbai learned recently.

Yesterday, a constable of the Railway Police Force, Rajesh Jahangir, was caught inappropriately touching a woman seated near him at Kalyan Railway Station.

A man seated opposite Jahangir had been recording the incident on his phone. In the video, Jahangir can be seen touching the woman’s back repeatedly, while in the pretence of being asleep. The woman, probably scared, tries to ignore it at first, but exasperated informs the woman with her about what was happening.

As soon as she does so, the men filming the incident and those seated near them cornered the constable. One of them slapped Jahangir while others raised cries of having the cop arrested.

Though Jahangir, falters at first from the unexpected assault, he quickly composes himself and tries to flee the spot. Moreover, he makes a bravado attempt to keep face by threatening to arrest the man filming him.

According to NDTV, Divisional Commissioner of Central Railways, Sachin Bhalode says:

“As soon as we saw the video, we conducted an inquiry and immediately suspended the constable. we have not received any complaint but based on the video, we are taking stern action.”

He adds that the Railways are taking strict action for the safety of women, with five Mahila Shakti teams, each led by a woman officer, constantly on the move.

While that is a good initiative on the Railways part, this incident proves that the responsibility to speak up or react to such acts lies with us. Jahangir would’ve gotten away with it, had the woman not mustered up the courage to react. Or if those around her had been intimidated by his uniform and not interfered. Let this be a reminder to all of us not to turn a blind eye to misdeeds around us. Speak up.
