As per a report by Hindustan Times, he was rushed to Bombay Hospital, Marine Lines, where he was given shock therapy. He suffered more cardiac arrest fits and is now on ventilator support.

A friend he made on the run, Dilip Ghadge from Kalyan, reached out to his family via Facebook since none of his immediate family was present in Mumbai and they reached Mumbai on Sunday afternoon.

Another runner, Sukesh Kabra, who is a Dombivali resident suffered a severe stroke which has led to partial paralysis of his body. A nearby runner said he collapsed after vomiting. The doctor at the hospital said,

“He is not fully conscious. Although his blood pressure and pulse are stable, recovery may take weeks to months.”

The doctors on board for medical assistance said that 2,300 of the total participation of about 45,000 people, required medical help during the marathon. The event has no death record in the last four years. However, this year 15 people were given intravenous fluid therapy and 4 people were admitted to the hospital owing to severe dehydration.

The doctors also said that there has been a substantial rise in the number of participants who reported dehydration, as compared to last year. Dr Nilesh Gautam, from Asian Heart Institute, said,

“This year was warmer, which has led to a higher number of dehydration cases compared to last year.”

The Mumbai Marathon is held to celebrate the spirit of the country, its wide-spread diversity and also to raise funds for various suitable causes as seen fit by United Way Mumbai organization.

However, given the deteriorating weather conditions in several parts of the country, the health of our people is also deteriorating. The heavy pollution in many metro cities is decreasing people’s immunity and causing breathing problems. It is unfortunate to see that the finishers of the philanthropic run cannot even celebrate their own success.
