Maneka Gandhi Points Out Exactly What’s Wrong With Bollywood ‘Romance’ And It Makes Sense

Eve teasing is one thing that Bollywood has used as a plot device, as a pointless scene to fill the movie and most of all – as a romantic scene.

Yes, eve teasing is almost synonymous with romance as far as Bollywood is concerned. Stalking a girl, pulling her close to you without consent, singing songs around her – all this so that she can finally give up and say yes.

That’s what we thought serenading means. Until we finally realised that it’s sexual harassment. And a very serious form at that.

Now, finally the Minister for Women & Child Development, Maneka Gandhi has come forward and said something that should be obvious to us all.

She emphasises how feature films have, until now, been the only way to get a message across to the public for the past 40-50 years.

She explains how every romantic scene practically starts with eve teasing. The hero would treat the heroine in a horrible way and yet get appreciated by the audience.

Maneka Gandhi eve teasing

“But always the medium starts with violence!”

Which is true. And it really needs to stop. Because things still haven’t changed. The movies today still propagate eve-teasing as a cute and romantic thing. Take for example ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ – it also had eve teasing in it.

Things need to change. Because Bollywood is influential and people who say it isn’t are in denial.

Bollywood needs to grow up and actually think about what they are propagating. Maybe then they will come out of the craphole that makes sub-standard movies.
