Recently, the Madras High Court directed Tamil Nadu government to remove the trailer for ‘Irandam Kuthu’, a Tamil adult-comedy horror film, from social media, reports TOI. The court called the trailer and its posters “obscene” and “vulgar” and claimed that the dialogues “affected the modesty of women”.
The Madras HC accused such films of instigating crimes against women and influencing youngsters. Times Now quoted the bench saying:
“We cannot forget the fact that there is a steep increase in offences against women and children. If these vulgar contents are available on social media, then it will definitely spoil the younger minds.”
While the petitioners wanted to restrain the release of the film, the judges rejected their petition saying that they cannot act as the censor board. The film already underwent 32 cuts and has received an ‘A’ rating.
This comes after a day of the government’s order to regulate the content of OTT platforms and online news portals by bringing them under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, reports NDTV.
There were many people who agreed to what the Madras HC petitioners had to say while some others opposed it. Here’s how they reacted to the news:
True. Now vulgarity must stop on the name of entertainment and modernization.

Tamil Cine Industry is right now swimming in the pool of double meaning dialogues, highly adulterated and unwanted contents which spoil the younger generations. Movies like #IrandamKuththu and vulgar songs and dialogues pose severe threat to women safety.

It is true that cinema has the power to influence people. And it becomes a problem when vulgarity at the expense of reducing women into sexual objects is celebrated on-screen. While artistic freedom is important, don’t you think filmmakers should be more conscious about the content they are creating? Tell us.
