Kerala Law Student Chops Off A Sanyasi’s Genital Who Allegedly Raped Her For 8 Years!

The day’s timeline, unfortunately per usual, is filled with headlines that make me cringe and sad every time I chance upon one. Stories of social injustice, of how women are not safe in their own homes. But in the order, there has emerged another piece of news that is not only enraging but also oddly satisfying.

You might call me names, for the above-mentioned statement, but the demand of the time has left me no other option.

Enraging because a then-minor(16) in Kerala was raped for 8 years until today when she found the courage to chop off the genital of her abuser- a godman, identified as Swamy Gangeshananda.

The accused, a member of the Kollam-based Panmana Ashram, was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College where an emergency surgery was performed. However, according to hospital officials, 90% of his penis was cut off and was not in a position to be re-attached.

 

According to the police complaint, the 23-year-old law student has been suffering abuse and rape since she was in class 12. She told the police,

“My father is paralysed and bedridden. My mother invited Swami for conducting pooja and offering prayers three years ago. He is a frequent visitor to our home.”

On Friday night, while attempting another rape, the woman grabbed a sharp object and chopped off his penis. The police have registered a criminal case against the sanyasi under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO).

 

Even the state Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan has applauded her act as courageous. In a press conference, he said,

“Brave step. It’s a good thing the girl did.”

Now that’s a first. But when will the atrocities stop?! Where are the lawmakers now?
