Indians On Reddit Reveal If They Would Consider Marrying A Divorced Person Who Has A Kid

Much of our Indian society is conservative. People still adhere to traditional customs and values and there is a tremendous amount of shame attached to being a divorced person. A person who is divorced finds it very difficult to get married again. So imagine what a divorced person who has a child has to go through. Society treats them as if they come with “baggage” which not many people are willing to deal with.

Somebody on Reddit’s r/AskIndia subreddit asked people online if they would get married to a divorced person who has a child, and it is very telling of the kind of society we will live in. Films and books will have us believe that love conquers all and if two people are in love, then it doesn’t matter where they come from. But to a majority of people in our society, their partner’s past holds a lot of importance.

There were, of course, some people who had no problem in marrying a divorced person with a child. However, there were some who had a prerequisite – that they should share a strong bond with the child before getting married. But on the other hand, there were many who were strongly against the idea of getting married to a divorced single parent.

Maybe one day, after we develop a change of mindset and let go of our conservative social conditioning, we will have a society that treats divorced single parents just the same as the rest.
