Breakfast is supposedly the most important meal of the day. India is a land of varied culture and traditions. When it comes to food, each state has its own delicacies. The food of each state is unique and equally delicious.
So what does a country as huge and varied like India eat for breakfast?
Here is a list of all the Indian states and their famous dishes that they have for breakfast.
1. Andhra Pradesh/ Telangana (Persarattu Upma)
Like most of the states in South India, Dosa and Idli are really popular here. Apart from Dosa and Idli dishes like Pesarattu Upma is also quite popular. It’s wholesome yet pretty light and if you are in Hyderabad, then Osmania biscuits with Irani chai is a must.
2. Arunachal Pradesh (Khura)
Khura, which is a kind of Pancake, is the most common breakfast that you will find in this state. Khura is actually a rare vegetarian dish in a state where non-vegetarian dishes are more predominant. Khura is actually a buckwheat pancake which people from this place most commonly have for breakfast.
3. Assam (Pithaguri)
There a number of items that constitute a traditional Assamese breakfast like Bora saul (which is a rice item), Kumol saul and Pithaguri( Rice Flour). Sira doi is also quite popular, Sira is flat pressed rice which is soaked in warm water to soften it and is served with curd. Pitha is another popular dish that people from this state have for breakfast, it is a traditional Assamese dish prepared with rice and flour and is stuffed with jaggery and coconut.
4. Bihar/Jharkhand (Litti Chokha)
Bihar is popular for its different types of paranthas. Sattu ka Parantha is really popular in Bihar. Litti Chokha is also a popular breakfast in some parts of Bihar. Litti is prepared from sattu, which is prepared with toasted ground barley grains which are ground, mixed with salt and turmeric and rolled into balls. Kachori and Jalebis are also quite popular. Both Paranthas and Kachoris are made from whole wheat dough.
5. Chattisgarh (Muthiya)
Chattisgarh offers you quite a few lip smacking dishes but the most popular breakfast of Chattisgarh is the Fara or Muthiya. These are steamed rice rolls in white sauce. It is usually served with mint chutney. Another popular item for breakfast is the Chila, Which is popular especially during winters.
6. Goa (Pao Bhaji)
In Goa, one might find a lot of Portuguese influences, bread or Pao, as the locals call it, forms an essential part of Goan cuisine. In the context of breakfast, Pao usually is consumed with bhaji which is a mashed up version of mixed vegetables in a tangy tomato sauce.
7. Gujarat (Dhokla)
Gujarat is famous for its lip smacking delicacies. In Gujarat, Fafda and Jalebi, Locho, Khanduri, Kharman, Dhokla, and Thepla are some of the popular dishes that you can have for breakfast. In this state, most of the dishes are purely vegetarian.
8. Haryana (Besan ki Masala Roti)
If you are in Haryana then the most common breakfast that you might have is the famous Besan ki Masala Roti of Haryana. It is a flat bread made from gram flour and is stuffed with mixed spices. Apart from Besan ki Masala Roti, many different types of Paranthas are also quite popular in this state.
9. Himachal Pradesh (Bhature)
When you are in Himachal Pradesh then you are most likely to be served Bhature with lassi for breakfast. Bhature is a kind of bread which is cooked by fermenting wheat flour. The Bhature is most often accompanied with Chole, which is made with peas.
10. Jammu and Kashmir (Sheer Chai)
In Kashmir, the most common breakfast that you might end up having is the famous Kashmiri Noon Chai or Sheer Chai with fresh bread like Baquerkhani which is made by local bakers. The particular colour of the tea is because of its unique method of preparation and the added sodas.
11. Karnataka (Upma)
Like most places in South India, Idli and Dosa are common even here. Apart from that Akki roti, Chapati, Chitranna(lemon rice), Tamarind rice, Neer dosa, Mangalore buns, Upma and Tomato rice is also quite popular.
12. Kerala (Puttu)
Though dishes like Dosa, Idli and Pongal are quite popular in this state but along with them, dishes like Puttu, appams, Idiyappams, and Kozhukkta are also quite popular for breakfast. Most of these dishes are made from rice. In Kerala, you can both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes for breakfast.
13. Madhya Pradesh (Poha)
In Madhya Pradesh, you would actually be spoilt for choice when it comes to breakfast. Poha with jalebis are the most popular breakfast here. Apart from that people also have Samosa and kachori for breakfast.
14. Maharashtra (Vada Pao)
This state offers you many tempting delicacies. The dishes of this state is famous for its flavours and spices. In Maharashtra dishes like Thalipeeth, Poha, Shira, Sabudana khichiri, Vada Pao and Misal Pao are also quite popular for breakfast.
15. Manipur (Eromba)
In Manipur, Tan and Changaang is the most popular breakfast combination. Tan is a deep fried flat bread which is usually served with a pea dal. Eromba also is quite popular in this state. People also have rice and mashed potato for breakfast here.
16. Meghalaya (Pukhlien)
The most common breakfast that you might have in Meghalaya is the popular dish called Pukhlein, which is a rice flour Jaggary Bread. Apart from it people often have rice and pork for breakfast. Most of this dishes are prepared in traditional Khasi style and is generally quite spicy.
17. Mizoram (Bai)
If you are Mizoram then you are most likely to have rice with green vegetables and chicken for breakfast. You can also try the famous Bai, which is a non-vegetarian dish that is cooked by steaming vegetables and teaming it up with pork, spinach and bamboo shoot. People from this state drink Zu, which is a kind of local tea.
18. Nagaland (Smoked Pork)
If you are in Nagaland then it is almost certain that you will have delicious pork or chicken curry cooked in typical naga style with rice for breakfast. Naga food is generally a bit spicy because of some of the local spices that they use.
19. Odisha (Chakuli Pitha)
In Odisha, the most common breakfast is the Pitha. In this state, you are likely to find different varieties of the Pitha.  Apart from it, Poori, Parantha, and Chakuli Pitha are also quite popular. The Chakuli Pitha is quite popular in rural parts of the state.
20. Punjab ( Gobhi ka Parantha)
In Punjab, you are most likely to have Parathas with a generous amount of butter for your breakfast. Punjab offers you a range of options when it comes to parathas like Allu Paratha, Gobhi Paratha and Paneer Paratha. Apart from Paranthas, Saag and Chappatis are also equally popular.
21. Rajasthan (Dal Bati Churma)
This state is known all over India for its great food. This state has a large number of dishes for breakfast. Poha is very popular in this state apart from it dishes like Dal Bati Churma and Gatte ki khichdi is also very popular.
22. Sikkim (Momos)
Due to Sikkim’s cold weather Momos are a common breakfast here. Apart from Momos, you can also have Thukpa, which is a kind of Tibetan noodle soup. Being close to Tibet, you can find the influence of Tibetan cuisines in Sikkim.
23. Tamil Nadu (Idli)
If you are in Tamil Nadu then you are spoilt for choice. This state offers you a large number of dishes like Idli, Pongal, different varieties of Dosa, Vada and Masala Vada for breakfast. Most of the dishes are made with a batter of rice and fermented black lentils.
24. Tripura (Fish curry with rice)
In Tripura, rice and fish curry is the most common breakfast. Due to a presence of a large number of Bengalis, the food habits of the people here is quite similar to that of West Bengal. Puffed rice, Parathas and even Luchis are quite popular in this state.
25. Uttar Pradesh ( Bedai with Allu ki Sabzi)
Uttar Pradesh is a vast state but if you are in U.P., the most popular dishes that you might have for breakfast are Bedai and Jalebi, Stuffed Parantha and Poori Sabzi. Bedai is also a kind of flat bread just like paratha and poori.
26. Uttarakhand (Gahat ki Daal)
In Uttarakhand, your staple breakfast is pretty much going to be Bhatt (black soya bean) and Gahat ki daal. Apart from Bhatt and Gahat ki daal, which is like their traditional breakfast, Uttarakhand is also famous for its awesome paranthas.
 27. West Bengal ( Luchi)
Most popular breakfast in West Bengal has to be Luchi and a curry but most commonly a curry made with potatoes. Luchi is nothing but a fried flat bread which is also called Poori in Hindi. In rural parts of Bengal puffed rice is also popular.
