Gold smuggling reminds me of those 90s Bollywood movies in which a suitcase filled with gold biscuits was the set idea of how gold was smuggled. But, the time has changed, and people definitely have gotten more creative.
A man hailing from Ulhasnagar in Maharashtra was caught smuggling 407 grams of 24-carat gold in his rectum at the Chandigarh International Airport.
The name of the smuggler is Deepak Kumar and he was traveling back from Dubai in an Indigo flight.
Deepak was arrested by the local office of director revenue intelligence (DRI) and the customs staff after they had received a tip-off from the Central team in Delhi.
After Deepak was stopped from exiting the airport, he denied all the charges, but finally gave in and confessed.
The gold was extracted from his rectum after he was taken to the washroom, and it was revealed that he was smuggling the gold worth Rs 11 Lakh for a gang of smugglers. The DRI officials are now trying to identify them.
Deepak is now in custody for interrogation. He will be prosecuted later as per the Customs Act, which can involve hefty penalty and other actions.
According to DRI officials, the smugglers have started exploiting Chandigarh Airport because security is much stronger at the Delhi airport.
Smugglings have been reported since September 15 last year, as that is when the airport became international. Most of the gold is smuggled from Dubai as it is purer and has higher market value in the Indian market.
Whatever said and done, this is certainly the ‘bizarre’ news of that day. Talk about being a ‘fancy ass’!
