From Twitter accounts to personal websites, cases of online security concerns come up every day. But what if the hacker turns out to be operating within your home? That was what happened in a bizarre incident that recently surfaced.
It all started when a man from Ghaziabad claimed that he was asked to pay up Rs. 10 crores by hackers. He alleged that his e-mail was hacked on January 1 and he was being threatened that his obscene pictures along with his family’s details will be circulated online if the demand is not met.
As per the victim, the hackers changed his e-mail ID’s password and mobile number by resetting the mobile number. He was then sent the mail with the demand for the huge sum of money, India Today reports.
In his complaint, he also stated that the hackers were continually harassing him and his family by keeping a watch on their activities. A case was then registered under IPC sections of criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a woman, and an intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, and section 66D of the IT Act in Ghaziabad.
Upon further probe, the cyber cell officials found that the IP address was from the victim’s house itself, meaning that the threat e-mail was also sent from there. The police then questioned the Ghaziabad man’s 11-year-old son, who soon confessed that he was the one who sent the extortion mail.
The class 5 student informed the police that he watched a lot of cybercrime videos on YouTube and learned how to avoid getting caught in such scenarios. After that, he started sending direct mails to his father from various e-mail IDs asking for money.
