Nalsar University, Hyderabad Gets Its First Gender Honorific Title – Mx, For Transgenders

Transgender have been struggling with the identity crisis since a long time.  Society has been putting up efforts to give them the importance and respect that they deserve like any other human being. We know there’s time for that to happen, but the little efforts that are pouring in are really laudable.

Nalsar University, a law university in Hyderabad has decided to introduce a new gender honorific – Mx, for transgenders or people who don’t want to be identified by their gender. This is followed by Oxford English Dictionary, which announced that it will introduce a new gender honorific – Mx, which stands for Mix.

This change came hard on the heels of a student who refused to take up any other title (Mr. or Ms) and requested the college authorities to change it as he has no idea as to what he wants to be identified with. In his own words –  “I asked the Nalsar administration to use Mx because I did not see any reason why my transcripts or academic records needed to carry markers of my gender identity, especially given that I am still uncertain as to how I wish to be identified.” Isn’t this worth an applause?! 🙂

Amita Dhanda, who is the convenor of academics and examination committee said, “The university takes a progressive line on issues related to identity and gender. So far the change has just been made in the student’s certificate but it might be used in the future as well.”

I’d like to quote Ban Ki-Moon: “To those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender-let me say- you are not alone. Your struggle, for the end to violence and discrimination, is a shared struggle. Today, we stand with you. And I call upon all countries and people, to stand with you too.

A historic shift is underway. We must tackle the violence, decriminalize consensual same-sex relationships and end discrimination. We must educate the public. I call on this council and people of conscience to make this happen.”

Well done, Nalsar! Way to go. 😀
