While you and I have been busy watching movies, India has found herself in a fiery milieu again, over the debate of the season- if national anthem should be played in theatres. Not to mention the cry and hue over its offshoot- if standing should be imposed on people.
And, honestly, to say that it has given rise to polarising opinions, would be an understatement. Earlier, Sonu Nigam weighed in on the debate saying he is against playing the anthem being played in theatres however, that shouldn’t stop people from standing if it is!
Well, now Gautam Gambhir who is known to stand up for the country beyond the anthem, has waded in and his words have evoked a lot of people in ways more than one.
If you haven’t seen it already, the Indian cricketer recently took to Twitter to tweet this.
Standin n waitin outsid a club:20 mins.Standin n waitin outsid favourite restaurant 30 mins.Standin for national anthem: 52 secs. Tough?
— Gautam Gambhir (@GautamGambhir) October 27, 2017
“Standing and waiting outside a club:20 mins. Standing n waiting outside favourite restaurant 30 mins. Standing for national anthem: 52 secs. Tough?”
And while there were a few who echoed his sentiment and lauded it…
1. What did I say about echoing?
People are ready to stand for hours at the Ticket Counters on their favorite Hero's movie release but finds it tough to stand for 52 secs
— Aditya Yellanki (@adityayellanki) October 27, 2017
2. And lauding?

3. One said it is a ‘duty.’
— SauRabh ShuKla (@saurabh0395) October 27, 2017
4. And there were people who seconded that.
No, it's not tough, it's our duty. Each and every time any where I heard national anthem, stand up and voice says D tune of National Anthem.
— Ritwik Ghosh (@gritwik98) October 27, 2017
5. Irony?

The rest just couldn’t see any logic in it!
1. Choice should prevail.
No one Compelled you to stand outside restaurant.
No one Compelled you to stand outside a club.
But National Anthem is being Imposed upon.— Lonely Chap 🚶🚶 (@Demolisher0007) October 27, 2017
2. And not if it is required by the law.
It's not about how tough it is! It's about demanding respect instead of earning it. I'm not going to stand because it's required by law.
— Bharath Reddy (@seyrup) October 27, 2017
3. Another argument amidst many read,
While I wait for the table at a club, and I manage to sit for a while, the bouncers won't thrash me.
— Gabbbar (@GabbbarSingh) October 27, 2017
4. ‘Nationalism or hooliganism?’

5. On another note…
I get up when I hear National Anthem. No one asks me to do it. Theatre is a place for entertainment, let us enjoy without any compulsions

In fact, not just sides, people were taking on each other. Sample this:
Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra had a rather scathing remark to Gautam’s tweet…

Which was counter-argued by a certain Piyush who decided to answer Kunal.

However, Kunal–in the first time in the history of trolling–decided to make amends.
I support PIYUSH that was dumb trolling by me https://t.co/v0LkzifQnr
— Kunal Kamra (@kunalkamra88) October 27, 2017
While Kunal’s response could be sarcastic, there is no denying the fact that Gautam Gambhir has divided the Internet into camps.
Talking about camps, which side are you on?
